Week One

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this module as I haven’t done much in the way of CMT before and my only true encounter with diffusion was the concert and workshop held last semester.

I thought I was really going to struggle when we began setting up the diffusion rig but working alongside and observing the students on the CMT pathway really helped. I also enjoyed the fact that we were able to have a go at using the mixing desk to try out some diffusion and it was interesting to learn the different ways in which the sounds could be moved around the room and the different effects this could create.

After the lesson I went away and listened to some tracks from the album ‘Clair De Terre’ by Robert Normandeau and really liked the rhythms and percussiveness of the sounds. I went and looked up the GRM that was mentioned in class and learnt that it was a group set up in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer to conduct research in electroacoustic music.

This week I’ve attempted to record some different sounds from around my house. I’m not sure if these would work in diffusion as I wasn’t sure what sort of properties the sounds needed to have. I used three different sound sources, a door creaking, some eggs being whisked and a remote control bird flapping its wings. I made a copy of the original sound for comparison and then proceeded to use some of the effects/techniques I learnt in the music and technology module to alter the sound.
